I’m so sorry to hear that Hilda my father’s (Fred) cousin has died. I was so looking forward to seeing her at the Christmas function, but the government took both days away. I always enjoyed seeing and talking to her.

We are so sorry for your huge loss. We are thinking of you all and our sympathy is also with Hilda’s sisters Shirley and Patty. Aunty Hilda has been such a unique and wonderful presence in all of our lives for such a long time and she loved her family very much.

Today’s funeral service was beautiful and I am so grateful that I was able to watch it from home and therefore feel a part of it. I noticed in the background, directly behind Auntie Hilda’s coffin, that the Australian flag was flying high in the wind. I think that Hilda would have loved that, as she was proudly Australian. I loved hearing about her life.

Hilda had a special place in her heart for my Dad, Mick, as she was the older child that was allocated to look after him when he was young. When he was a baby he became very ill, and when things took a turn for the worse, Nana told Hilda to fetch the Doctor immediately. She told me that she ran so fast, that she didn’t feel her feet touch the ground. She maintained that bond with my Dad until he passed away and continued it with us after he was gone. I was never bored in Hilda’s company, as she had many stories to share and advice to impart. I will treasure the patchwork quilts, the handmade cushion slips and knitted socks and toys that she gave us over the years. And I will miss her handmade pickles and butter biscuits and jelly cakes. It is good to know that she is now with Uncle Les.
